Just like people all over the world, people in China traditionally associate luck with various things and numbers. The numbers six and eight have auspicious meaning because the words they sound similar to have positive meanings.

The number six, pronounced "Liu", sounds like the word for "slippery" which can mean "Easy and Smooth".

The number eight in Mandarin is pronounced "Ba" and sounds similar to the Cantonese word "Fa" which means "to make a fortune".
